What is a K9 inspection team?
A certified K9 inspection team is comprised of a handler and a dog who have been extensively trained in the detection of live bed bugs and their eggs. A dog’s sense of smell is anywhere between 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than ours and they devote 40 times more brainpower to sense of smell than we do. Our team trains every day on live bed bug scents in order to give you the most accurate results possible.
While they are busy working dogs, they are well cared for by their handlers and do have days off to rest and play. Our team is Third-party certified with W.D.D.O (World Detector Dog Organization). These certifications are renewed annually.
Our K9 inspection team will have the ability to inspect a variety of properties including single family homes, multi-dwelling buildings, offices, medical facilities, social housing and commercial properties in the Lower Mainland.
How does the service work?
Once a K9 inspection is scheduled, a pre-inspection checklist will be issued to you in advance to prepare your residence for the K9 team’s arrival. We recommend that you follow the instructions listed as best as possible. The more diligent you are with the preparation process the more effective the dog will be and the more thorough the inspection.
Our K9 inspection team will arrive at your residence at the appointed time and the handler will first to conduct a pre-inspection of the area that entails a safety hazard evaluation and to confirm the area is sufficiently prepared for the dog to conduct the inspection. Factors such as potential harbourage sites and the best path for the dog to move through the home will be determined.
As the K9 team moves through the search area, should the K9 indicate to any specific areas, the handler, who is also a licensed pest technician, will visually verify the area for live bed bug activity. We do not recommend treatments unless we can confirm the presence of live bed bug activity.
Please remember that bed bug detector dogs are working dogs and are not to be petted.
How can a K9 inspection team help you?
Have you been travelling recently? Have you brought in used items into your home?
Have you noticed insect activity on your bed or furniture? Are you waking up with itchy red marks on your skin?
A bed bug infestation is a health concern. Reactions from bed bug bites are different for each person and range from no reaction to itchiness, swelling, redness, and other skin problems. Bed bug bites may also have a delayed onset of symptoms, days or weeks after being bitten. The presence of bed bugs is stressful for those affected and might lead to the sleeplessness, anxiety, and other health-related issues.
If you have suspicions that your home may be harbouring bed begs, A K9 inspection team is your best option for the detection of these parasitic insects. While bed bug traps and human inspections are viable ways to detect bed bugs, a K9 inspection team has the ability to identify even one live bed bug or viable egg that may be missed by conventional visual inspection methods.
Service from a K9 inspection team will provide you with peace of mind knowing that a fully certified dog known for its extensive training, powerful sense of smell, and considered one of the most reliable bed bug detection methods out there, has inspected your home.
One Time Inspections
If you think you might have bed bugs in your home, business or apt. building, rather than having a technician attend why not have our K9 team respond? We can conduct the most accurate bed bug detection procedure in a fraction of the time it would take a person to search.
Pro-active, pre-scheduled K9 services
The best way to stay ahead of future bed bug infestations in your premises is to have ongoing searches set up with our K9 team. By sweeping a set number of units per service, it allows us to find any new infestations at their lowest levels. This is critical to keeping bed bug costs down over the long term. We offer weekly, monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly service options. Contact us today for a quote.

Our Canine Detection Specialist: Kate Powers
Kate has a lengthy background working with animals, particularly dogs and horses. She started training and competing with dogs when she was young. “Growing up in a family and extended family who were always doing some manner of canine sports gave me not only countless opportunities to be mentored by experienced dog handlers, but more importantly to observe how dogs learn and interact with one another as well as their handlers.”
Kate went on to compete successfully in a multitude of canine sports herself over the years with her Belgian shepherd Morgan. Kate also has regularly volunteered with different canine sports groups with teaching and officiating.
This knowledge base set her up well for a career with detection dogs. She has been active in the field of bed bug detection for the last 8 years. In order to work with dogs in this capacity, Kate was required to complete an intense handler’s course as well as pass a third-party certification at the end of that course.
Kate and her current canine partner “Halo” are a formidable force when it comes to finding bed bugs in a variety of environments such as private homes, commercial spaces like offices, medical and public housing just no name a few. Their days are a mix between training, field work and administrative duties.
The training and care for a bed bug dog never stops. Kate and Halo have daily, weekly, monthly training targets as well as having to re-certify each year with a third-party certification body: the World Detector Dog Organization, (W.D.D.O). Keeping on top of a scent detection canine’s training is vital to remaining a viable tool in the field. Kate is regularly committed to attending seminars and courses related to improving her canine handling skills.
However, as serious as Halo’s job is, she still lives a life where she is allowed to fetch and run and occasionally sleep on the couch, (when no one is looking!).
DETECTION AND TREATMENT SERVICES
In some cases, it is logistically preferable to have a set of inspections booked with the K9 team and then conduct treatments for any units found active with bed bugs. Since our handler is licensed to perform such treatments, it is simply a matter of making sure the units are prepared for appropriate treatment application at the time of the request.
