Pharaoh Ant Control in Vancouver & the Lower Mainland

Seeing tiny yellow or light-brown ants repeatedly appearing in your kitchen, bathroom, apartment or workplace? You may be dealing with Pharaoh ants.

Pharaoh ants are one of the more difficult household ants to eliminate because they can establish colonies in small, hidden spaces throughout a building. Unlike ants that nest outdoors and simply enter a home looking for food, Pharaoh ants can live and reproduce indoors.

What Are Pharaoh Ants?

Pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis) are extremely small ants that are typically yellow to light brown, with a darker area around the thorax. Their workers are only about 1/16 inch long, making them easy to mistake for other tiny household ants.

Pharaoh ants are primarily indoor pests. They can establish nests in protected spaces such as cracks, wall voids, behind baseboards, behind countertops and other small cavities that are difficult to locate. They are attracted to a variety of foods and may also seek moisture in kitchens and bathrooms.

How Do I Know If I Have Pharaoh Ants?

Our approach focuses on locating and treating the colony itself, not just the ants you can see.

A few signs point to pavement ants specifically:

You may have Pharaoh ants if you are repeatedly seeing:

  • Very small yellow, tan or light-brown ants
  • Ant trails along countertops, cabinets or baseboards
  • Ants around sinks, bathrooms or other areas with moisture
  • Ants appearing in kitchens or around food
  • Ant activity coming from cracks, wall voids or other concealed areas
  • Ants continuing to appear even after visible workers have been killed

Size and colour can provide clues, but they are not always enough to positively identify the species. Pharaoh ants can be confused with other very small household ants, so professional identification can be important when treatment has not worked.

Why Are Pharaoh Ants So Difficult to Eliminate?

Pharaoh ants can be difficult to eliminate because a colony can spread by budding, creating new colonies when the existing colony is disturbed or becomes overcrowded.

This is one of the most important things to understand about Pharaoh ant control.

Instead of producing a traditional mating swarm, Pharaoh ants can establish new nests when groups of workers and queens move to another location. This process is known as budding.

That means simply killing the ants you can see may not solve the underlying problem.

In some situations, inappropriate insecticide applications can actually cause an infestation to become more widespread by disturbing the colony and encouraging it to establish additional nesting sites. Health Canada specifically warns that spraying indoor ant trails can encourage some indoor colonies to split into multiple colonies.

Pharaoh ant control needs to focus on the colony and its behaviour—not just the visible ants.

Pharaoh Ant Control: Our Approach

At 1st Pest Control, we don’t treat every ant infestation the same way.

1. Identify the Ant

The first step is determining what species you are dealing with.
Pharaoh ants can look similar to other small household ants, but their behaviour and control requirements are different. Correct identification helps determine the appropriate treatment strategy.

2. Assess Where the Ants Are Active

We look at where ants are appearing, where trails are developing and the conditions that may be supporting the infestation.

This helps us understand whether the activity appears isolated or whether there may be additional areas involved.

3. Develop a Targeted Treatment Plan

Pharaoh ant control requires an approach that takes the species’ nesting and colony behaviour into account.

Depending on the circumstances, treatment may focus on baiting and other targeted control measures rather than simply applying a contact spray to visible ants.

4. Explain What to Expect

Pharaoh ant control is not necessarily an instant process.

Because the objective is to affect the colony rather than simply kill individual workers, it is important to understand what you may see following treatment and why continued ant activity does not automatically mean the treatment has failed.

5. Follow Up When Needed

Some infestations require additional attention. We monitor the situation and recommend follow-up treatment when the circumstances call for it.

Our goal is not simply to make the ants disappear for a day or two. We want to address the infestation at its source and help reduce the conditions that allow it to return.

Our Service Area

We treat pharaoh ant infestations across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, including Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Moody, New Westminster, Surrey, Richmond, Langley, North & West Vancouver, and surrounding communities.

How Long Does Pharaoh Ant Treatment Take?

There is no single treatment timeline for every Pharaoh ant infestation.

The time required can depend on the size of the infestation, where colonies are located, how widely the ants have spread and how the ants respond to treatment.

Bait-based control can take time because the objective is for the bait to be carried back to the colony and shared among colony members. University of Minnesota Extension notes that ant baits can take weeks or longer to eliminate an indoor colony, depending on the circumstances. This is different from a contact spray, where visible ants may disappear quickly even though the underlying colony remains.

What Should I Do If I See Pharaoh Ants?

If you suspect Pharaoh ants, avoid automatically spraying every ant you see.

    Instead:

  • Take a photo if possible so the ant can be identified.
  • Note where you are seeing the ants.
  • Check whether activity is concentrated around food or moisture.
  • Keep food sealed and clean up crumbs and spills.
  • Keep countertops and other food-preparation areas clean.
  • Contact us if the ants continue returning.

Health Canada recommends reducing accessible food and water sources as part of ant prevention and emphasizes following pesticide labels and using only products registered for the intended pest and treatment location.

Pharaoh Ant Prevention Tips

Keep food sealed

Store food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs, grease and spills promptly.

Reduce moisture

Pay attention to leaking faucets, plumbing issues and areas where moisture accumulates.

Keep surfaces clean

Regularly clean countertops, floors and other areas where food residue can accumulate.

Seal accessible cracks

Sealing cracks and gaps can reduce potential pathways into and around your home. Health Canada recommends sealing visible cracks and crevices as part of ant prevention.

Don't rely on killing visible ants

Seeing fewer ants temporarily does not necessarily mean the colony has been eliminated. With Pharaoh ants, the hidden colony is the important part of the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pharaoh Ants

Are Pharaoh ants dangerous?

Pharaoh ants are primarily considered an indoor nuisance and food-contaminating pest. They are not known for damaging wood like carpenter ants. Some ant species, including Pharaoh ants, have also been associated with the transmission of pathogens, which is one reason their presence in food-related environments should be taken seriously.

Are Pharaoh ants hard to get rid of?

Yes. Pharaoh ants can be particularly difficult to eliminate because colonies can establish new nests through budding, and nests can be hidden in inaccessible areas of a building.

Can Pharaoh ants live inside walls?

Yes. Pharaoh ants can nest in wall voids and other concealed spaces inside buildings.

Why do I keep seeing Pharaoh ants after spraying?

Spraying visible ants does not necessarily eliminate the colony. In addition, disturbing Pharaoh ant colonies with inappropriate insecticide applications can contribute to budding and the establishment of additional colonies.

Will regular ant spray get rid of Pharaoh ants?

Not necessarily. Pharaoh ants require a species-specific approach, and indiscriminate spraying can interfere with baiting or disturb the colony.

Do Pharaoh ants nest outdoors?

Pharaoh ants are primarily associated with indoor nesting in regions where they occur. University of Minnesota Extension notes that they nest indoors and are not an outdoor-nesting species in its region.

Why are Pharaoh ants suddenly appearing in my kitchen?

Pharaoh ants may be attracted to food and moisture. Kitchens provide both, which makes them common areas for Pharaoh ant activity. They may also be travelling from concealed nesting areas elsewhere in the building.

Can Pharaoh ants spread between apartments?

They can move through connected areas of a building, and infestations in multi-unit properties may involve more than one area or unit. If Pharaoh ants are repeatedly appearing after treatment, the wider building should be considered rather than focusing only on the visible trail.

Should I kill the ants I see?

Killing individual ants may reduce what you see temporarily, but it does not necessarily address the colony. With Pharaoh ants, the treatment strategy needs to account for their ability to establish hidden colonies and spread through budding.

How much does Pharaoh ant control cost?

The price for Pharaoh ant treatments start at $250+GST whether is an apartment, condo, detached home or townhome and new customers can claim 10% off the treatment.

At 1st Pest Control, we provide a clear quote before treatment begins. Our existing ant-control service notes that Pharaoh ant pricing varies according to severity, nest location and treatment methods.
